Join Choir 2023-24

There is a place for every person in our choir program. Whether you are very experienced, or just starting out as a vocalist, we have a spot for you to grow in.

Don't forget to reserve the dates for Choir Camp!

Open Choirs

Our two open choirs do NOT require an audition or any previous experience. Simply register for Chorus (treble voices) or Baritone Choir (tenor/bass voices) and come learn to sing with confidence, harmonize, read music and perform like a pro. Please also email Mrs. Encina so that she can be in touch with you over the summer!

CHOIR CAMP:

Rookie Registration 7/18, 2:00-5:30pm

Chorus - "Encore" - is a Treble Choir, which means all the singers are sopranos and altos. If you're not sure whether you're a soprano or alto, you can ask Mrs. Encina to help you find your voice part. Currently period 2.

Baritone Choir - "Meistersingers" is made up of tenors and basses. If you're not sure whether you're a tenor or bass, you can ask Mrs. Encina to help you find your voice part. Currently period 3.

Auditioned Choirs

We have two auditioned Class choirs, which meet during the school day, and one auditioned a cappella ensemble, which meets after school. Auditions for these groups will take place in May. To schedule an audition, email Mrs. Encina at bethany.encina@cjuhsd.net. You can register with your counselor using the underlined course titles below - after auditions, students will be moved into the appropriate class.

How to Audition

If you'd like to audition for an advanced choir, the first step is to email Mrs. Encina at bethany.encina@cjuhsd.net to set up an in-person meeting the first week of May. At that point, you can either send in a 30-45 second video of you singing any piece of music (any genre), or you can plan to sing it in person in May.

In person audition: Mrs. Encina will take you through some vocal warmups to hear your range and understand where your voice sits comfortably.

Next, you'll do tonal memory - Mrs. Encina will play a short series of pitches and ask you to sing it back. This tests how quickly you're able to learn passages of music by ear.

Next, you'll do some sight reading. Mrs. Encina never expects a student to sing the sigh reading exercise 100% perfectly. The purpose of this part of the audition is to understand how much experience you have reading music. If you don't have any experience, don't be discouraged! You'll learn how to do this in any of our four class choirs!
